Forms of horse races: Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Harness, and Steeplechase

Race tracks in the US: For thoroughbred racing, typically oval, with both dirt and turf courses, approximately 1 mile in length

Race tracks outside the US: For thoroughbred racing, often irregular in shape and length, generally turf courses only

Race direction: In the US and Canada, always counterclockwise; elsewhere, usually clockwise

First public race track: The Smithfield Track of London, built in 1174
